Introducing “Punk Ass Sorcerers” 🤘🏻✨

August 10, 2022 Jamey Alea 0 Comments

I recently got to collaborate with my good friend Charlie Bacon on a new two-stat roleplaying game called Punk Ass Sorcerers. Actually, I don’t want to sell it short: the full title is “Punk Ass Sorcerers Fighting The Man Who Is Just Being Kind Of A Dick To Them, Like Personally” and I think that it says a lot about the game.

It’s a two-stat game, in the style of single page RPGs like Honey Heist and Lasers & Feelings. It’s longer than a page—we released it as a zine, the most punk format we could think of—but it’s no more complicated than other single page games. Your two stats are CRUST, which determines how socially acceptable you are to general society, and PUNK, which is more about how law-abiding or badass you are. (Yes, “law-abiding” and “badass” are opposites.) It has a system for chaos magic, and it’s full of fun bonus powers and scenarios that you can roll for. But also, we’re not the fucking police, you can play the game however you damn well please.

Also, the great news is, this shit only costs three (3) American dollars. $3!!!!!!!! That’s a steal. (Also, you should feel free to actually steal it if you can, we’re not the cops.)

It’s available online on DriveThruRPG and itch.io and it comes with 2 versions of the PDF – one that’s laid out in the proper order for digital use, and another that’s laid out such that you could print it out and make it into an actual zine.

Or if you want me to make the zine for you, you can get a physical copy! If you’re local to Buffalo, NY, it’s available at Gather & Game on Grant St, which is an excellent store you should definitely check out and not steal from. Or if you’re not local to Buffalo, get in contact with me and I’ll send you one in the mail!

Bacon is the writer of Punk Ass Sorcerers, so I want to make sure he gets most of the credit. He is an awesome game writer, and this is the first game he has put out, which is really exciting. (He has also been working on a series of modules for D&D 5e called “Magical Joy Scouts of Love and Happiness” that my group has been playtesting for more than a year now, and I will be absolutely thrilled when I can finally share that with the world too!)

Meanwhile, I helped a little with the content, but mainly I laid out and created the zine, since clearly this is a game that needed to be released in hand-drawn zine format. And regardless of if you get the physical or digital version, they’re both based on my zine, so you’ll be reading the rules of Punk Ass Sorcerers in my handwriting. Bacon is one of my best friends, and we’ve collaborated a lot throughout the years, but this is the first thing that we can really point to like, “we made this!”

But if you don’t want to take my word for it, read this one and only review of the game, as posted by Liam B. on DriveThruRPG:

The Man said I couldn’t write a review. Well fuck him I’m back and doing it. You should love this fucking book, and if you don’t, well you can eat a nasty sack of rotten pears. You like simple systems that get ass-blasting HUGE fucking FAST? This is that shit. If you don’t, you’re prolly one of those narcs, and again. Pears motherfucker. Get you a couple of dice, a couple of punks, and go tell you some sweet stories.

Or.

PEARS.
